Now, whilst time isn’t something you have in abundance as a new parent, for me, there were some opportunities for deep, meaningful thoughts – usually around the 2am and 4am feeds!
Something about staring into a tiny human’s half-closed eyes in the dead of night will make you really start to think about things, and I don’t mean next weeks’ food shopping, I mean the really important stuff.
Parenthood in general makes you re-evaluate a lot of stuff, but I thought I’d share a few things with you because you just never know what you might need to hear!
1 – Your energy is so valuable, don’t waste it
This one mainly comes from a lack of sleep – but it’s something I think is so important, no matter how much sleep you’re getting!
Again, it sounds so logical yet how often do you waste energy on people, problems, tasks that really don’t matter?
Stressing over the way someone said something that didn’t sit right, overthinking your latest social media post, or conversation with a work colleague.
Worrying about what to have for dinner for the next 5 nights, or whether that person at your new workout group was staring at you because she likes your leggings or thinks you’re too fat to be there.
All these small things take up SO much of a valuable time and effort, which means that time and effort is being taken away from the really important stuff – like how you build a million dollar business, spending quality time with your family, choosing love over anger, learning more for your own self-development.
So, instead of wasting your precious energy on things that won’t matter in a year, capture those thoughts, and turn them into something productive, positive and impactful instead.
2 – Stop playing small
We only get one go at this life, so stop playing smaller than you were meant to be because you don’t get a second chance!
Do you want to leave a legacy, have an impact, and be a positive influence in this world? Then stop waiting for “tomorrow” and start putting yourself out there in a way that terrifies you!
If there’s something you’re passionate about, then the world needs it – there is NO reason why you shouldn’t chase your dreams and be a light in the world.
Everyone has a reason they are here, so find yours and shout it from the rooftops!
3 – You actually don’t need THAT much sleep….!
I used to panic if I didn’t get a full 7 hours (I’m a terrible sleeper so I felt like the earlier I went to bed the better I’d feel!)
Since having a baby, sleep is one of the first things to go (news flash, I know!) but I haven’t felt like the zombie I expected to – broken sleep is still sleep, stolen naps are still sleep and at the end of the day if there’s something you want and you feel strongly about, you’ll find the motivation/discipline to make it work.
Note: I am NOT suggesting you reach a state of burnout – listen to your body and rest before it’s too late!
Get up a little earlier, stay up a little later – trust me, you’ll find the time when it’s that important!
4 – Keep your circle small
Friends, colleagues, business connections etc.
The saying “show me your 5 closest friends and I’ll show you your future” is there for a reason. You are so hugely impacted by the people you spend your time with, so make sure you’re spending it with the right people.
- People who support your goals, no matter how crazy.
- People who will pick you up when you’re down.
- People who love you no matter what.
- People who push you to be who you want to be, who challenge you.
- People who inspire you, and who you can inspire.
And remember – this all goes both ways! Don’t expect it from others if you aren’t prepared to do it for them!
And what does all of this mean for me and the direction of my business?
Throughout all of this I have realised that my purpose now is to help women – business owners, mothers, employees – those that have the feeling that something is missing…that they are here to do more, they just don’t know what that is, or how it’s even possible.
Women who feel like “labels” from their past, or even current, are holding them back or defining their lives in a way that doesn’t fit right.
